Monday, September 25, 2006 at 23:58 I’ve wanted to blog about this all week, but have only just been able to get round to taking a picture.
About a month ago I found a great art project called One Thousand Paintings. The concept is so simple, and brilliant for the internet: Sala, a Swiss artist, is painting 1000 paintings, consisting of the integers 1 to 1000. Each one has the same form but is, obviously, unique and the entire set forms a perfect, limited edition collection which is slowly traversing the globe. Stu’s birthday was approaching and I thought that the 331 canvas was a great idea for his present, that number being the one Stu wears on his shoulder pretty much every day.
In the event, the package arrived on Tuesday, a couple of days late, but this only added to my excitement when it finally was delivered; I’m not completely sure what Stu thought as he unwrapped it, but I think it looks great on the wall, and I think it’s growing on its owner.
Both boingboing.net and the BBC have featured the story, and copyblogger.com has a good piece, which pretty much mirrors my thoughts on why the phenomenon has somewhat caught the internet zeitgeist. Above all, though, it’s an artwork that I really like and which has an interesting story behind it, as well as being personal to its owner. Great stuff.
